Overview

Bodesi Glass tiles are custom made glass tiles to be used on vertical surfaces for residential and commercial applications. They are suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use. They are made from clear float glass, a commonly known material and widely used in most windows. Because of their inherent material properties they can be used anywhere typical window glass could be installed. This means wet application such as showers, tub surrounds or saunas and steam rooms are acceptable applications. The installation of the tiles is a familiar process that is typical of porcelain and ceramic tile.

Kitchens, Backsplashes and dry areas are a little bit easier, simply because there is no water involved. Showers, tub surrounds, saunas are slightly more complicated simply because the substrate and structure are absolutely critical to a good job.

If you are a professional contractor, hired installer, architect, developer or if you are installing in a commercial areas – we strongly recommend reviewing and following the installation guidelines set out by The Tile Counsel of North America, (https://www.tcnatile.com/) as well as appropriate ANSI standards for installation.

Critical properties

Bodesi glass tiles are manufactured to satisfy or exceed the appropriate requirements set out by the National Standards Specification for fused glass wall wile as set out in Standard ANSI 137.2 -2013

Bodesi Glass tiles are made from impervious glass, and therefore have the properties of being:

  • Frostproof
  • Impervious to water and stains
  • Highly resistant to chemical attack
  • Resistant to fading and discoloration

Manufacturing Process and Product Description

Our tiles are made with a process that involves starting out with large sheets of glass, then a process of painting and cutting and finally kiln firing the glass is involved. The process requires painting the glass on the back and/or front of the glass, and firing it kilns up-to 800C. This type of process is known as the fused glass method. The glass is then cooled in a controlled method to reduce the internal stress in the glass, this is known as annealing and prevents the glass from cracking from undue stress.

Glass

We use primarily 6mm thick glass that comes in two basic types. The two basic types of glass used are known as ‘regular clear float glass’ and well as ‘ultra clear glass’.  Ultra clear glass is also known as ‘low iron glass’ as it is characteristic for its ultra clear properties due to the fact that this glass has a lower iron content. Low iron in the glass production process results in a much clearer color of the glass.  Both types of glass maintain similar physical characteristics aside from clarity and light transmission. Generally regular float glass, due to its slight hint of green -blue color is suitable for colors in the blue range. Colors that require absolute clarity without interference such as red, yellows, brown and some grays – we use the ultra clear glass.

Enamels

Our tile is enameled with a proprietary blend of ceramic pigment and glass frit. We have developed our own formula to fine tune our properties of opacity and color correctness. We have spent 4yrs developing these water based enamels with lead free ceramic pigments, as well ultra low emissions of harmful chemical during the manufacturing process. Our paints are water based which means a comfortable work environment, with no risk or discomfort to our workers. Ultimately this gives absolute control of pigmentation and colorization of our tile. Our Hand Painted series is in fact hand painted! This gives the product a unique variation from piece to piece; every installation, and tile, is unique.

Cutting

Our tiles are cut with sate of the art CNC glass cutting machines resulting in the most accurate glass cuts possible. Because all of our tile is made to order, means we can easily modify our sizing to accommodate designer’s requirements to fine tune the sizing to avoid odd size off cuts, or to assist is in large scale installations. Our tiles are sized nominally in inches and the actual sizes are commonly undersized to accommodate for 1/8” grout lines. Custom grout widths are available based on request.

Installation guidelines

General installation is similar to ceramic or porcelain tiles. Due to the wide variety of installation materials , substrates and specific situation of installation – the installer must conform to their respective installation guidelines and parameters as set out by The Tile Council of North America, (https://www.tcnatile.com/) and the respective suppliers of installation materials. General guidelines and material suggestions are available online at www.bodesi.com/installation/
